For some shopping is the act of searching and purchasing. For me shopping is part searching and purchasing but more than that it is searching and reflecting.
I do enjoy the acquiring of things, especially shoes. Acquiring shoes is nice. Just as nice is finding something wonderful and being able to replicate it without purchasing it. Somethings I can’t replicate, and therefore I must own and so I purchase them and feel the excitement of the items that now belong to me. While I’m shopping I’m also storing up ideas and reflecting on ways that items can be altered, distilled or adjusted to become an item that reflects more of me than what could be purchased there on the spot. This type of shopping is thrilling and energizing beyond the excitement of owning something new.
Shopping is also compiling memories. My special purchases have lined my mind with memories of people and places I’ve loved. I have items that bring me back to the streets of Madison hunting down great finds with Dana. And I lovingly recall D.C. botiques with Sasha, Michelle and Linda. Best of all is the recent trip to the stores in Paris with my mother. A scarf is more than a scarf because I got it when I was there with my mom. Paper is more than decorative paper because I found it when Kay and I were looking for inspiration in Chicago.
Shopping is shopping. But Shopping to me is collecting items, images and memories.
